Can We Still Buy Kaspersky Security Products?
2017 hasn't been a great year for global security company Kaspersky. The rumors have flown. Kaspersky informs the Russian government. Kaspersky steals private data. Kaspersky spies on its clients. Kaspersky cheats alone. At this point, we took a close look at all the available information, consulted with various experts, and found that there is no real evidence to support these rumors. In this case, can we still buy kaspersky internet security?
Not much has changed since then. There are still rumors; test not yet. US government agencies must still use Kaspersky software. But aside from putting its products on the do-not-buy list, the US government hasn't punished Kaspersky by throwing like a ton of rocks at other foreign companies.
There are indications of a Kaspersky-related security incident that became known shortly after the government's ban. The media hysteria version of the story says that Kaspersky stole pirating software from the NSA. What happened was much more mundane.
Like most antivirus programs, Kaspersky Anti-Virus looks for programs that exhibit suspicious behavior but do not match the signatures of known malware. One of these programs may be new malware, often referred to as a zero-day attack. With the user's permission, it uploads suspicious and unpublished programs to its investigation team for analysis. This automated behavior caused the crash.
An NSA consultant broke protocol and copied some NSA hacking tools onto his Kaspersky-protected laptop. The security software recognized the tools as dangerous and sent them to Kaspersky headquarters for analysis. When company investigators found what they had received, they immediately disposed of it. End of story. Neither the NSA nor any other agency in the United States has taken any action because it is not illegal to obtain classified information accidentally.
Kaspersky found NSA tools due to advisor error. Avast has tried to de-identify data shared with third parties, but has not done so completely. The two companies worked quickly to remedy the situation. What if a company actively steals personal information?
In September 2019, the Federal Procurement Regulation Council formulated its policy to prohibit federal agencies from purchasing Kaspersky products. However, this is the level of government involvement. You or I can buy Kaspersky products from Amazon, Walmart, or any store that sells them. Some outlets, like Best Buy, choose not to stock these products, but that is your right.
Independent testing laboratories subject security products to rigorous testing. Some labs are only dedicated to finding vulnerabilities in products of all kinds. The review by security experts from around the world did not reveal any evidence of inappropriate behavior by Kaspersky. If you don't trust the government, trust the experts.
